Review and analyze now for company Union Jack Plumbing and provide the analysis in the discussed format for the following reviews: '''Good communication. On time.
Worked efficiently. One-man operation so no upselling or corporate bullst.
Extremely good caulking. Fair price.
Good conversationalist. My dog liked him (after the usual initial barking!) What more could you want? This is the man you want for the job.
I could not be more pleased with Union Jack Plumbing. Nick quickly installed a new toilet and bidet seat and did other plumbing work.
He took his time explaining what he was doing, was fair and told me other expensive work wasn't necessary, was friendly and our bathroom was spotless after he left. I had read a ton of reviews from many other sources which sang his praises, and they spoke the truth.
They don't make many like Nick. I have known Nick for over 30 years - back in the day, I sold him products and know him as an honest and fair guy to deal with.
He is very knowledgeable and efficient with his plumbing repairs. Finally, he has many years of experience and has been a part of the Austin scene for decades.
You can't go wrong with Union Jack. Conscientious, smart, fair priced.
I'm in the trades myself and frequently my clients will ask me for other service professionals. When they ask about a plumber and it's south of north Austin, I always tell them Union Jack! I used Union Jack Plumbing to fix broken shut off valves and change a faucet.
Union Jack did both very quickly, correctly, and for a reasonable rate. I would use Union Jack again.
If you need a reliable, honest and experienced plumber, I couldn't recommend him more! Personable, informative and efficient. Hire him!! This was just as good as I hoped it would be.
First off, I had spent several days trying to fix a poor design in the plumbing that the builder had originally installed, by myself. As an official Rocket Surgeon, this was a very bad idea (I know, I know, I have seen all the shows and commercials where the lady of the house yells "NO!" when the gentleman of the house gets all his tools and then goes to the hardware store).
This was a drainage issue. This had to be fixed or over time, there could be an incident and water get behind the sheetrock.
So YELP worked out perfectly. I read a review by a fellow Yelper who had just used Union Jack.
I kept reading and found a number of my Yelp friends also had good results. Now the meat and potatoes.
I called, got a voice mail which also gave the number of Nick's cell. I called and he answered immediately.
We quickly discussed the situation and he said he was finishing a job nearby and could come by shortly (!). However, I had to leave, so we agreed on a time the next day.
The next day comes and he arrives exactly on time. As I had sent TXT photos the previous day, he knew what to expect.
He worked extremely fast and did not do the usual chit chat to extend the clock time. Also, he had all the parts in factory sealed shrink-wrap in his van and did not have to add an hour of time by going to the hardware store, which seems so common.
He resolved our issue by replumbing as it should have been done originally. In short, no damage to the sheetrock or behind, everything worked perfectly and the cost was 30-40 percent less than others.
Sadly, he only does light plumbing now, but his card is now on our refrigerator. Extremely satisfied and pleased to pay for a job well done! Nick was fantastic and on point.
We needed a new bathroom vanity faucet installed and he knocked it out quickly and efficiently. He even corrected a few issues with the previous install and made everything right.
He's reliable, honest, and experienced. I'd highly recommend him for any plumbing repairs/installs.
He was excellent! I have used this company for many years. Nick Green, the owner provides reliable and honest work.
He listens to the customer and goes the extra mile without even being asked. I highly recommend Union Jack Plumbing to anyone looking for plumbing services.
You won't be disappointed! Nick is going to be our future plumber, even though we haven't had him fix anything himself yet! Our fridge went out this weekend, and I quickly found a replacement for it. As we were moving out our old fridge, the little hose thing in the wall that would hook up to the fridge's ice maker and water dispenser refused to close because the valve was stuck open.
We turned off water to the house over the weekend since we couldn't get the water to stop leaking if the water main was open. Cue three days later, we all smell bad and are frustrated over the lack of care from my home warranty company to get someone to come out to fix what I would call an emergency water issue since we don't have water (either we flood the house to get a shower in, or not have any water to the house at all).
Unfortunately, our problem started on Saturday, and plumbers generally don't work weekends unless you're willing to pay $$$. We gave up on our home warranty company and called around local plumbers to see if anyone could come out today (Monday).
Unluckily for us, all plumbers we called were not free until Tuesday. When we called Nick, he picked up right away and my boyfriend explained the situation to him and how we've tried to figure it out so far.
He commended my boyfriend for getting as far he did with the problem, and further explained to him how to fix the leak ourselves with a hose bib and some plumber's putty/dope(?). He told us we didn't need him and could do it ourselves.
30 minutes later, we have water to the house and no leak at all. I highly recommend Nick even though we haven't used him (yet) due to his extreme kindness in helping us fix our own problem.
We'll be going to him once my home warranty expires and we have further plumbing issues in the future. I recommend Nick highly.
He's prompt, efficient and reasonably priced. And he appears to really know what he's doing.
I've used him two or three times over the years and highly recommend him. Nick was friendly, very knowledgable, communicated great and fixed our multiple problems in an efficient manner and affordable price.
Highly recommended, even if the Yelp algorithm may not say so... I was very pleased with the service provided by this company.
He installed new plumbing under my kitchen sink and moved the gas pipe which was too high to allow the new new range to be placed flush against the wall. Everything was done in a quick and efficient manner.
Needless to say, Union Jack is saved to my contact list :) Was able to come out quickly. Fair and honest.
I highly recommend Nick and will use his services again. Nick was so helpful! I sincerely appreciate his thorough check on my kitchen faucet.
He quickly and efficiently solved the problem, fixed it and double checked it too.!!!!! I highly recommend him. Nick is the BEST.
We hired him to unclog a sink, and replace a faucet in the upstairs bath. My husband had tried Draino and Liquid Plumbr, two different snakes, plus a good old fashioned plunger with no luck.
Nick had that clog cleared out in less than 10 minutes! Friendly, fast, fairly priced, and in the time of Coronavirus, I am happy to say he wore a mask to keep him and us safe. I can't say enough good! He was so helpful in guiding me through the process of getting the correct fixtures before he came to install.
If he hadn't I'd have had the wrong parts for our bath remodel. Friendly and professional.
He wore a mask the entire time working which we appreciated for his safety and ours. He was on time and reasonable prices.
We will use him again. Nick is in high demand for good reason.
He's been our go-to plumber for over 20 years! A fountain of knowledge, top-notch work, and such a pleasant fellow. Jack has always been responsive, honest and hard working.
Really appreciate having his expertise. I just had the best shower in years thanks to Union Jack Plumbing!! My shower had been either too hot or too cold for so long that I thought I would have to have an entirely new shower installed ($$$$).
Nick worked on it for about an hour and it runs better than it did when we first had it installed! I'm very pleased with the quality of work, promptness and reasonable cost of Union Jack Plumbing. I feel that we have found our household plumber and I highly recommend Union Jack! I paid him to replace my garbage disposal; but when he was done and turned on the water, my dishwasher was leaking at the bottom.
I watched him work like a hawk. I believe The problem is that He works too too fast.
Btw this is my first one star review. Nick came to fix our toilet within 30 minutes of my phone call.
Wow! He did a superb job and was very knowledgeable.Great guy! Just had the best experience with this kind man. We spent at least total 30 min on the phone he was trying to help me fix my plumbing issues without even having to come out!!! What a nice man.
Unfortunately, I did need him to come install a brand new garage disposal. We was so friendly, fast, efficient and fair with his pricing.
He's doing all his precautions (N-95) mask and if you've been sick recently or out of the country he won't see you at the moment (fair). Highly recommend Union Jack is my first call for any indoor sink/toilet/faucet type issue.
He was on time, professional, and the price was competitive. I've recommended him to my neighbors and they also have glowing things to say.
For us he has fixed a crazy running toilet and replaced a kitchen faucet. Seriously don't look any further, you will be glad you contacted Nick at Union Jack.
I recently called and made an appointment for some items around the house that have been problematic for a while. When I left a message, I received a callback within a short while.
Nick was very prompt and arrived on time. He was able to fix all of the items without issue.
However, this write up would not do him justice if I didn't add a few other things. Nick is a true craftsman and I must say that I have only encountered such a professional a few times in my life.
He knew how to fix the issue, didn't overcharge for parts that you did not need and above all - this is an honest man. All of which is a rarity these days.
Would highly recommend Union Jack to anyone and I will be a return customer whenever the need may arise in the future. I've never met a plumber, or any repair guy, as good as this guy.
First, he can fix frickin' ANYTHING. Second, he does it fast, and has the parts with him.
Third, his prices are usually lower than other estimates. He responds to service requests right away, even if he can't do it (a rarity), and he gives you a one-hour arrival window (not two, not four), and then arrives on time, every time.
The first time he came, he took less than an hour to fix the problem, but since I was paying for an hour, he spent the rest of the time going around the house fixing other little plumbing issues until his time was up. He's polite and explains what he's doing quickly and clearly, and why you might or might not choose to do some repair.
I've never had a better plumber, I can't recommend him highly enough. "The British are plumbing!" "The British are plumbing!" OK, so those of you who know me automatically know that Nick had the inside track based on his sense of humor alone.
I called Nick on a Saturday after my irrigation company and I identified an issue with a valve that could be affecting the efficiency of my sprinkler system. It wasn't an emergency, but I called and left a message for Nick on Saturday night, because it never hurts to get on any tradesman's list early.
Monday eve, whilst amid an after-hours call from a co-worker, I get this lovely call from a perfectly British Jolly Old St. Nick.
He understood my problem from my phone message, and we made a date for Wednesday. On Wednesday, Nick promised to call after 11:30.
True to his word, he called shortly before noon to say he was on his way. He was at my residence within 45 minutes.
To make a long story short, for a few minutes, it really was looking like a Hard Candy Christmas. Nick took a couple of hours to work his magic with my plumbing.
If you watch him work, you'll know this is one plumber who isn't using any other kind of pipe dope. When he's done, everything is tight, leak-free, and flows like a firehose.
Speaking of which, during the surgery, Nick had to repair a bit of the apparatus. Now, that might make most of you squeamish, but in this case, Nick simply tidied up an incredibly inefficient job done by my builder's plumbing subcontractor.
I had always wondered why the washer took 15 minutes to fill, and why a flush of the guest loo caused my master bath shower to slow to a trickle. Nick solved my flow problem, so now the washer fills in 3 minutes and the master bath shower head actually makes you tingle on massage.
In short: - Nick is the ultimate professional - Nick returns phone calls - Nick shows up on time - Nick is serious about his plumbing--and yours - Nick is funny as all get out - Nick is not out to nick you - Nick keeps his word. Five stars seems a plumb pittance, wouldn't you say? Abraham Lincoln said "You may fool all the people part of the time, and part of the people all the time, but not all the people all the time." Milton Freeman said "There is no FREE Lunch".
My dad always said "If it seems to good to be true, then it usually IS too good to be true". And you know what I say? "Nick at Union Jack Plumbing ROCKS"!!! - and you can Quote me on that! Why? 54 ea.
5 Star reviews SAYS IT ALL...but I'll say it again; 1.) Personable customer service, 2.) Prompt and dependable, 3.) He gives thoughful explainations you can actually understand! 4.) Fair pricing with efficient work. He replaced the following; - 3 toilets (from cheap Vitromex 'builder brand' that are only worth the $22 he prolly spend on them) with awesome Eco-Drake 1.28 gpf model.
No more back-ups for me to clean-up! - Unclogged a 'shower insert' where we had no hot water in the guest shower. No more pissed off MIL for me...yea!!! - A leaky drain valve on a hot water heater - so I did not have to replace the whole hot water heater!! And since I like nicknames...I recommended he be called Nick-the-Quick...but sadly, he declined.....something about 'other implications'...Oh, well....I tried! After all why would you use some plumber that was your BIL's BFF from grade school? If you have plumbing issues, give Nick a call.....quick!! So dis dude is da chit.
Nick is friendly, grew up in Greece on an island, went to the same international school I went too, engaging in conversation and even like my wife talks to himself as he works away. He is a plethora of information and knowledge to boot.
I have had a shower stall that needed a new lever. I let him know it was a Moen after we went back and forth on phone calls and texts, I called today to see if we could schedule an install.
He actually had a cancellation this afternoon and asked if he could pop by to do the job and I was available. He called when he finished his job and made his way over and got here about 4.20pm.
The guy works a full day and this I respect. He came in, got busy, replaced the Moen tap, gave us an option of different lever and bing bang walla wally ding dang, job done.
I frankly don't know price points, but $245 all in, with assistance in picking our a new water heater, tweaked my toilet handles seemed alright. Second time out for Nick and if I have anything more needed, he will be my guy..
.always. Thanks NicK! The first time Nick came to my house to replace all the plumbing under each bathroom and kitchen he was working for Lanier Plumbing.
His cost including parts was just under $300 dollars. I had called one of the more visible plumbing companies and they came out and gave me an estimate of $900.
It was quite a difference. This was at least 8 to 10 years ago.
A few years later I needed a new hot water heater. I called Lanier and found out he had started his own business Union Jack Plumbing.
I called him and he picked up the new water heater and installed it. I was very pleased with his work and cost.
I have used him several more times to change out toilets (etc.) and he was great. He is a weekend biker and talks a lot about his travels, very enjoyable.
He mentioned a dump hamburger place near Johnson City and how he liked the burger there. I was headed there soon after and stopped and tried the burger and he was right it was good.
I don't remember the name of the place. I highly recommend Nick, he is honest and does an excellent job.
Great service. Extremely fair pricing.
Quality work. If you are looking for an exceptional plumber, look no further.
Very professional and straightforward. Very helpful answering questions and explaining things.
Just a fantastic experience all the way around. Couldn't be a nicer guy, super clear communication and does great work.
5 stars without hesitation. We called on Nick for help with at least two plumbing issues, and he not only resolved both of those issues, but he also ended up pointing out some serious plumbing disasters waiting to happen and helping us resolve those, too.
He pointed out the roots of each problem and explained what he was doing with each job. He took great care with each job and was a model of helpfulness.
I would absolutely call on him first for any plumbing, hoping he has some availability!!! Very responsive, quick to show up and on time, very knowledgable and communicative about what he saw and what he was doing, was able to tweak multiple aspects of a toilet replacement, had all the spare parts needed with him, checked and double checked the seals and function of the newly installed equipment, compensated for issues with the flooring not being totally level, the foundation not being real solid at the anchor points, etc. Not the least expensive job, but apparently very well done.
I hired Nick Green from Union Jack Plumbing to uninstall my kitchen sink prior to my countertop installation. He was then asked to come back two days later to reinstall my new sink, faucet and hot water dispenser.
I want to go on record that I had a really positive experience working with Nick. When he came out the first time to uninstall my kitchen sink, he made some recommendations that really made a big difference to me.
He knew I was getting a new sink so he advised me to buy a new sink assembly kit so that I would have a new stainless steel ring with my new sink. I had not thought of that.
I actually did not realize how that would make a big difference in the look of my sink. He also noticed that my filter for my hot water dispenser needed replacing so I was able to order one from Amazon overnight.
My installation went smoothly and I was totally pleased. Nick is very knowledgeable and experienced.
He takes the time to understand what you want and not only comes prepared to accommodate you but will help you make sure that the final result will be what you want. I couldn't of been more pleased.
Nick is now on my preferred home vendor list. My friend recommended Union Jack and they were right, he's wonderful! Super professional, very nice ....
and he fixed our bath tub fixtures!! WooHoo!! We've been living in this house for 6 months since we purchased it without using the tub. It's so nice to have it finally working!! I couldn't be more thrilled.
If you need a plumber, call Union Jack!! I hired Union Jack because of his good rating on Yelp, but my experience differs. I live in a 17 years old house.
The toilet plumbing started to leak after about 10 years. First, I replace them myself.
But, later I decided to go for a professional. I found Union Jack Plumbing with good rating.
So, I hired him. He showed up, he worked fast, and each item cost me about $90.
I would have been satisfied if this had lasted at least 7 to 10 years. But, no, after 1-2 years, the toilet started leaking water, not on the floor, but down the bowl.
The water bill creeps up. I suspect he used the cheapest parts he could find.
Now, I have to either replace them myself or hire another professional. If the builder would use parts that lasted 10 years, why wouldn't he? Needed a bathroom spout replaced, had been installed poorly by DIYer.
Showed up on time, was very friendly and informative about the job, said that because the job needed some soldering it would cost a little more than usual. Job took exactly one hour and the charge was 280$.
part installed was a 35$ part. I know that plumbers are expensive but 250$ an hour seems pretty steep.
I read many favorable reviews for Union Jack and that's why I called him. I should've read farther back in 2013 and asked for a quote up front.
My bad. He spent less than 2 hours at my home replacing tank bolts on 2 toilets and re-attaching a toilet to the plumbing beneath the tile floor.
He charged me $450.00 without an itemized receipt. I was in shock, but had to get to work.
He also announced upon arrival that "I don't do leaks." Wow - really? Plus when I got home that evening - I noticed 2 huge chips in the porcelain at the bottom of my toilet. I don't know how he did that - but he managed.
Maybe dropped a heavy tool? Who knows - but I won't be using him ever again. All the nice demeanor in the world won't get you far with outrageous prices and no itemized receipts.
NO THANKS. Very professional and reasonably priced! Happy with the work that was done.
Had a good under sink filter installed. It is working great no issues.
Our problem: A pretty gross backed up bathroom sink. Fortunately Nick was able to help us the same day.
He returned my call quickly, scheduled a time, and was done in about 45 minutes, tops. His price was reasonable, not too different than other providers.
I would definitely hire him again if we happen to have another plumbing issue! I highly recommend Nick. On time, inexpensive and best of all did a great job installing a new faucet and sprayer in our kitchen.
I even learned a bit along the way! Thanks Nick Overly honest and no nonsense guy. Every time we have had issues he has been able to correctly diagnose the problem and give us an estimate on parts and labor.
He also always gives us the option to pick up the parts ourselves. Can't say enough good things about Union Jack.
Nick, the owner of Union Jack, is bloody amazing. One of the nicest guys you'll meet and very professional.
Nick was responsive to my initial inquiry and then on time, friendly, professional, and very good on pricing. Plus, I'm a curious person and Nick had no problem explaining to me how a PRV (Pressure Reduction Valve) works and how many other plumbing things work.
He seemed to relish in sharing his knowledge. Nick was also very generous with his time.
I called him out for one thing and then had him fix 3 other things that I unfairly sprung on him. He took it all on with a smile.
Seriously, look no further. This IS your guy! Nick is amazing.
Showed up early, walked Me through his process, and got everything done quickly even though it was cold and rainy. Explained the issue clearly and got the job done.
He's quite the character too. He's our go-to guy My long-established realtor, here in Austin, gave me Union Jack Plumbing as a business contact that she trusted, for both responsiveness, quality of work, and fair pricing.
I can report, with 100% confidence and truthfulness, that Nick, owner of Union Jack, followed through in ways totally aligned with those recommendations. I always think a specialist--in any field--should explain what he is doing, suggest ways to maintain the "fix" he's done for a problem, and offer to follow up, should any more questions or issues arise.
Again, Nick gets an A-plus, in his customer service, follow-through, and follow-up. I will not hesitate to call Union Jack again, should I ever need plumbing upgrades or repair work.
I have no business or family association with Union Jack or with Nick and am very pleased to have this business on my contacts list. Sorry it took me a few months to get around to writing this review.
Let me start by saying, Nick and Union Jack were frankly the best experience I have ever had with a plumber. I built a green house with dual flush toilets before dual flush toilets were readily available in the US and ended up with a strange toilet- installed strangely.
And after ten years it needed repairs. Numerous plumbers flat out refused to work on it.
Nick, however, came out and spent the time and thought to figure it out. He really is great at his job, and able to creatively think through the problem to a solution.
He also was able to do it for me while I was out of town AND CHARGED A COMPLETELY FAIR PRICE. On top of all that he is a cool guy to talk to.
I really cannot recommend him more highly. I was about ready to give up and have a whole new toilet install done- but Nick fixed it up! Thank you again!! I would absolutely use Union Jack's services again! best, Geoff (ps...Nick, what's your email again.
I owe you a thank you.) First, a tl;dr - Nick is honest, very reasonably priced, knows his stuff, and is so much fun to visit with. If you don't have time to read the rest of this, take my advice and hire him now.
Also, avoid Whirlpool water heaters. They have a part that is known to routinely go out.
My water heater went out. It's not ancient, so I figured that it wouldn't be complicated to repair.
Expensive, of course, but not hard to have someone in to do the repair. I was so wrong! I called 5 plumbing companies prior to calling Nick.
I hadn't needed a plumber before (lucky me!), so I was just calling based on positive Yelp reviews. Three companies couldn't see me until the end of the next week.
I'm happy they are busy and thriving, but was getting worried because I really didn't want to be so long without hot water. The two other companies I called never responded to my voicemail messages.
These were smaller businesses and I suppose that they were too busy to return my call. Nick answered my call and knew so much about my water heater that he helped me get a head start on what to do.
He explained that this water heater - a Whirlpool purchased at Home Depot 6 or 7 years ago - is known for having this particular part to go out. I don't remember the name of the part, but it keeps the pilot light on.
He suggested that I call Whirlpool and have them ship the parts he would need to do the repair, and also told me that the parts may still be under warranty, something that hadn't occurred to me. The parts ended up being covered by warranty, which saved me a few hundred dollars.
I only had to pay for expedited shipping. I was unhappy that I had to pay shipping at all, knowing that Whirlpool had made the mistake by using inferior parts well after they knew that so many customers were suffering from their mistake.
I texted Nick once I had the parts, and he came over the next day. Our water heater is in the attic.
The attic must have been a gazillion degrees. Up Nick went, and replaced the damaged pieces.
There is more to the saga of the Whirlpool. It ended up having the same parts fail in a week and a half.
Nick isn't doing water heater installation at this time, so I called one of the big companies with advertising everywhere to give me a quote for replacement. I was curious what someone else would charge to replace the faulty parts I could order from Whirlpool.
I was shocked! He wanted more than twice as much as what Nick did to replace parts that I would be providing! His estimate to replace the water heater was twice as much as Nick's very rough estimate. It's almost as if some plumbers have so much work that they lob i out super high estimates.
We are on day three of having a new tankless water heater that was installed by a bigger company. I won't review them yet as there have been a couple of snags.
I want to see how they see things through to the end. If you're searching yelp for a plumber, you probably have an unpleasant situation going on.
I wish you speedy and reasonably priced repair. Very expensive.
Ask for quote before you give him the job. I ended up paying up to $135/hour We had toilet, kitchen sink and shower issues at our rental property in Austin and called Union Jack.
Nick responded with a price quote that was $200-$400 less than any of the four other highly rec. plumbers (4.5+ yelp stars) in the area so we chose him.
He arrived on time ready to rock and roll and he did. Worked smart and hard for a little over and hour and half (that likely would have taken 2-3 hours for some companies).
Total bill including parts was right around $325 which was very fair and reasonable considering the tasks, issues, effort and great attitude. Thanks Nick! Quick same day service, top notch work, fair price, and on time.
I would definitely use again and I would most certainly recommend. I love owning a home...but I hate dropping cash on maintenance.
I can think of a thousand other things I'd rather spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on, but what are you gonna do? So when something goes wrong in my home, I am already harboring unfounded animosity toward whomever I need to call to fix my problems. This time it was my hot water heater.
The stupid little pilot light would not stay lit. Normally, I would just power through and relight the thing when I wanted some hot water, but with a house full of guests, that was not an option.
Cue the hunt for a plumber. After calling a few places with at least a week's lead time, I came across Nick at Union Jack Plumbing.
He answered right away, and asked all sorts of questions about my heater and what was going on. And then said he just needed to pick up some parts and he'd be there in about an hour.
Shut. Up.
I have a feeling I just so happened to get really lucky on timing since my job was a quick fix... Nick is a REALLY friendly guy who was awesome about keeping in touch.
He texted before he got to the store, and right before he got to my house. He was explained what he was going to do, said it would take about an hour, and then he got straight to it.
Less than an hour later, he was done. He took the time to explain exactly what he had done and why my tank should last another 10 years.
And then said he had a one year warranty on his work. And he cleaned all the bird poop out of the tank closet.
And then my animosity at paying for maintenance waned a little. A little...
Nick was friendly, prompt, a great communicator and did a great job. Should I need a plumber, I will absolutely be calling him again.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Nick with Union Jack. He was very quick to respond to us.
Just from the description we gave him over the phone he knew what was wrong with our plumbing. He came out the next day and fixed everything and was under budget.
Fast friendly and fair! Yes, I am actually writing one of those reviews where you address the other Yelpers who have reviewed before you. Daniel C.
with your one star for not getting a call back--um, did something bad happen to you and maybe one time your girlfriend or boyfriend never called you back? You know the kind, the ones that say, "I'll call you later" but then they never do? Even when you got naked on the first date? Even after you named all of your future children together over pizza and three bottles of cheap wine on that fabulous-walk-of-shame-the-next-day-kind-of-evening? Yes, sometimes people don't call you back. Sometimes you just sound like that kind of bonedog who will leave you a 3-star review even after you do an amazing job.
Or, maybe, you have a high voice and no one can understand you when you leave a message. Or, maybe you bought the new 3G iPhone only to have the crappiest voice quality in the world and maybe no one will ever be able to understand you on the phone ever again.
Or MAYBE, just maybe, Daniel C., that lovely Nick at Union Jack did call you back and you just didn't know. Did you ever think about that, buddy? THINGS HAPPEN.
You can always call back unless you did that already and you're just that stalker dude who can't let go. That all being said, I learned today that leaving a one-star review for this sweet man Nick just about broke his heart, marring his perfect (and well-earned) Yelp five star reviewing average.
There is a reason that Nick has the highest plumber rating on Yelp. It's because he's AWESOME.
Even if he didn't call you back, bonedog. And, in case you're wondering why I am actually writing this review, Nick adeptly fixed the in-ground burst pipe that attaches to our garden hose on the side of our house.
While it was fun having an impromptu wet t-shirt contest trying to fix this with my boyfriend late last night in the dark, Nick was a welcomed fix to our plumbing issue! I had a clogged drain that needed to be fixed, and called Nick at the recommendation of a neighbor. He was very responsive, and was able to squeeze me into his schedule on the same day.
He was quick, considerate, personable and even entertaining. He was my first call when I needed a plumber and will be next time as well! Yelp don't lie.
Nick will be the only plumber I call as long as I live in Austin. Honest, funny, pleasant, prompt and reasonable.
He took $60 off the bill because, "we were sitting around and having a chat" for thirty minutes. We're having some serious plumbing issues and while Nick can't complete the job (he doesn't have a camera to look into the pipes, nor does he tunnel under foundations) he made us feel like we were being taken care of and not being swindled.
Hey Nick, I forgot to ask...you work on cars? Union Jack saved us from ourselves. We have spent two years renovating our house, and most of the people we have hired were pretty terrible.
Union Jack really saved us from ourselves. Water spewed from the spigots when we watered the beds and garden.
It was a mess. For about $130, we were set up with vacuum sealed spigots that do not spew, sputter, spray, or splash the water (How's that for alliteration?)...not a drop.
There is no noise in the house as well! They also come with winterize sealers already installed. So come November, I will be drinking coffee while the neighbors run around to cover their faucets with towels, tourniquets, and toppers (alliteration...
ahhh!). I do not want to make my new faucets to seem though they are more than they are, but it's pretty nice to keep it all clean, green, lean (That's assonance.) If you could ever say that an experience dealing with a major plumbing issue was pleasant, this would be the time.
Read all the reviews of this guy - they're on the level. He's professional, funny, on time, reasonably priced, detailed and never hurried.
All service people could learn a lesson from Nick. We had a situation very similar to that of prior reviewer Kent W.
Our water bills had shot up (over $240 last month alone!) and we found our meter box full of water. Nick came and immediately suggested that it was a common failure located about 1 meter (an homage to the UK for Nick's sake) down the line.
He dug it up and voila - there it was. He not only repaired the leak, he improved the situation overall by adding a shut off valve for our use (the City will fine you if they find out you shut off your own water with their shut off valve).
When finished, you'd never know he was even there, digging up a 1 m x .5 m area of your yard. He is pleasant, funny, chatty and honest.
We talked about other issues I was concerned about, and he gave me estimates and recommendations for all. We've found our plumber, that's for sure.
It's funny, Chewy C. mentions a reviewer who gave Nick one star b/c he never called him back.
Nick mentioned this today to me - how upset he was that someone would besmirch his workmanship without even having had him work. Make your own decision, but all "five stars' from some long-time, known Yelpers sure beats a single "one star' from a question mark head who complains about not getting a call back..
If you have plumbing issues (household, not personal), give Nick a call. He's absolutely top notch, and yet another great Yelp find.
Thanks fellow Yelpers, you pointed the way. 40 reviews with an average of 5 stars? That 's pretty rare on Yelp from my experience, especially for a business like plumbing.
But so well deserved. So here's one more 5 star review..
Nick is a super nice and professional guy, I am soooooo glad I called him to come over and figure out where my mystery leak was coming from (turns out I had two, and he found them both). With all these positive reviews, he is definitely in demand, so he is a busy guy and had to push our appointment back a little, but he called to let me know with plenty of notice so I wasn't wondering where he was.
And he's an honest guy - I decided I wanted to replace the kitchen faucet while he was here, even though it wasn't the source of this particular leak (though at the rate it was going would probably have been one in the near future). Nick had a new one with him, made it clear he'd marked it up a little, that I could probably find the same one a little cheaper on my own - I appreciate that kind of honesty, and was willing a pay a little more to get it done right then.
He's also full of some pretty helpful tips, so pay attention. Isn't it funny when your one-star review mysteriously disappears for no reason? I also ran into the problem that he did not call back, even within the time frame noted on his message.
That's something he needs to work on if he wants to have a perfect rating. Since writing this I understand he has modified his voice mail to include a disclaimer that if he doesn't call back by 8 pm then he will not be able to "get to you." If his business is so great then good for him, but that's not a great way to get new customers.
The bottom line is that you're taking a chance if you call him, and you'll have to decide if that's worth it. When it comes to plumbing, sometimes you just can't wait.
I can't really review Nick's work, but, I can say this. I called him after a crappy experience with American Home Sheild sending ARS who told me I needed $1725 worth of work to break up roots.
I left a message for Nick, who called me back in about 5 minutes. He's too busy to come out (I'm assuming thanks to all the good reviews on here!), but referred me to another company and told me that his price for this work would be less than one tenth the price quoted for ARS (which was probably for way more work than would have been necessary anyway) and the referral he gave me should be within $50 of that.
So yeah, talk about AWESOME service and avoidance of what could have been a freakin' meltdown on my end. If I've got plumbing needs in the future, and Nick's available? You can bet your butt I'm calling him (and referring him to friends in the future).
Nick ROCKS! He's definitely the most trustworthy plumber I've ever had to deal with. He gets the job done well and quickly and his fees are more than fair.
Plus, he's British, so just being around him makes you smarter. :) UPDATE: He's also a pro at installing plumbed-in espresso machines! It's true what they say.
Nick returns phone calls. He is prompt, friendly and efficient.
His prices are fair. He fixed a leak in my sprinkler line complete with the surgery required to untangle the roots from the line and wires.
I am a fan! I recognize that I can be a fairly difficult consumer and if I feel ripped off, I will do everything I can to insure other folks hear about it in the hopes of saving them some grief. That's the benefit of Yelp...
On the flipside... When I come across someone who is priced fairly and displays integrity and competence in their profession, I love to share it.
These 5 star reviews are no joke people. I've had Nick out to my house several times and if you can get him out, do it.
My water pressure has been horrible for a long time and my neighborhood plumber, who will go unnamed because he lives right next door, never got to the root of the problem. Nick did...
And for that, I am very grateful. I was showering with a trickle until he showed up and figured out the city needed to come out and fix a leak.
Nick wouldn't even charge me because there was nothing for him to do. - He's great.
I've dealt with many plumbers in my time, but none were as thorough and as friendly as Nick from Union Jack plumbing. We purchased a new kitchen and needed everything hooked up properly.
After trying this ourselves we quickly realized that we didn't have the tools or the skills we needed. I checked online and came across these reviews and decided that to have 5 stars after this many reviews has to count for something.
We placed a call and a few days later had an appointment set up for him to come over. When he arrived he quickly identified the work and started getting everything sorted out.
Within an hour or so it was working beautifully and he was able to test and clean the area in a matter of minutes. Nick definitely has a good sense of humor and was a pleasure to talk to during the job.
For those wondering about the cost he installed the plumbing to my kitchen sink, retooled all of the hook ups and connected the disposal and dishwasher connections for a little over $200. I found this reasonable and worthwhile given the skill and expertise he was able to demonstrate.
I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a good plumber and after speaking to others and reading the reviews I'm glad we chose him. My hot water heater went out and I am not fond of cold showers even after coming in from a day in the Austin Heat.
I saw the reviews for Union Jack and decided to give him a call. After taking a look he gave me an honest....YES completely honest opinion.
"the tank appears to be leaking and there is substantial corrosion here. Most likely you are going to have to replace the entire unit.
I could spend 3-4 hours fixing it and it may still not work." and no- he doesn't even sell water heaters so it wasn't an attempt to up-sell me but actually saving me money! I asked if he charged a trip fee (Another plumber I called in the past charged me $45 to look at two toilets that he didn't even look at and gave me an estimate of $450- I fixed the toilets myself for $12 in parts at home depot) but back to the point- Jack said NO- he wasn't going to charge me anything. Time is valuable- he even pulled his tools out so I appreciate the kind gesture.
I will DEFINITELY call him for any future work. Nick has over 100 reviews on yelp, and almost all of them are 5 stars.
The ones that aren't are from people who never actually used him. That should tell you something.
Nick did an amazing job repairing some toilets in our house. He was able to come out the same day and is fast, fast, fast.
I'm very happy with the work he did and he's incredibly charming and a genuinely nice guy. Give him a call.
Once again, under threat of exploding pipes in this old house, I called up Nick to save the day. He came as promised and fixed the leaking sink and pipes beneath and everything is as good as new.
Quick, punctual, and reliable as usual. Based on all the stellar reviews I went ahead and called Union Jack.
We were still traumatized over the whole AAA Auger mess and wanted to call someone with with great reviews this time around. He reviewed our issue over the phone to see if it was a job he could take on.
We appreciated this. Because we have a pier beam foundation he was able to come take a look.
Turned out AAA Auger made more of a mess than we thought and Union Jack had to correct their mess. Nick was great at explaining every thing that what was wrong and why nothing was flowing as it should.
He then explained what he was going to try to correct the problem because there was more than one approach to our situation. He explained every step of the way and fixed our pipes.
We found him to be reasonably priced and is the only plumber we'll use. So these yelpers were correct-this is the best plumber in town! Seriously, this guy's from England - his name is Nick Green.
On the side of his van there is a silhouette of Paul Revere with the caption, "The British are plumbing! The British are plumbing!" His prices are fair, and you'll have a bloody clog-free drain, mate. His son, Damian Green, is a local fiddler extraordinaire.
I haven't tried it yet, but maybe if you make the request, he'll come along for an extra fee and play a jig while his dad fixes your pipes. The problem with a lot of skilled labor contractors are that they're like flaky dates - most of them don't show up or don't even call you back (which has never happened to me, *cough*).
I don't think is an Austin-only problem, but it's pretty bad here. This is where Union Jack is different.
Nick shows up (and in Austin that alone will probably get you three stars). Sure, he only did one job at my house and it didn't flood, so as far as I can tell he's not terrible.
Once he called me back to tell me that he couldn't do a job, and he recommended other people instead. One caveat is that he doesn't do big jobs, so if you want to replace all the pipes in your house and pay him with a big sack of cash, he won't do it.
He's up front about this because he wants to be on call for emergencies. So: +1 point for a very friendly personality.
+1 point for reliability and honesty. +1 point for a giant British flag on his van.
+1 point for "The British are plumbing! The British are plumbing!" meaning he's in touch with his feelings about the Revolutionary War. +1 point for him describing how he drives through 12th and Chicon and waves back at the prostitutes on the street corner.
He's not going to call you back the first day. You know why? Because he is working on someone's sink and he doesn't want to be gabbing on the phone.
But he TELLS you that on his voice mail. Now, he's wonderful.
On time. Neat.
Another plumber suggested that I might have to get a new hot water heater. He miiiight be able to make a simple fix, but probably not.
Nick came in and made the simple fix - about $120 instead of $2000. Really sweet guy.
I put my two year old in overalls (which Nick calls his "happy pants") so he could be like Nick. :) Really, he's worth the wait.
ALSO: He fixed my wiggly toilet seat. I figured that out three days later when I realized that I was no longer ANNOYED everytime I sat on the toilet.
Nick came out to remove our old kitchen faucet and replace it with a new one we bought. He gave me an extremely spot-on estimate when I called, and also included a high-end estimate in case of specific scenarios.
I really appreciated the range and knowing what it would cost if there were some unknowns he discovered under the kitchen sink. He and his assistant were FAST-- he can obviously do this with his hands tied behind his back! They were also extremely decisive, tidy, and respectful.
You don't always get that just because someone is fast. Needless to say, our faucet was installed perfectly and looks awesome.
I don't know anything about plumbing, but it seems like he simplified whatever was going on under my sink before. All I know is that I have more room to navigate and I no longer have a leaky old faucet.
Yay! We also had great conversations about food, dogs, and yes... faucets.
He is a great conversationalist and this does NOT change the speed or attention he is paying to his work. I definitely don't want to need plumbing anytime soon, but if I do, I will not call anyone except UJP.
Thanks for everything, Nick! I have not used many plumbers, but once you find a good one you stick with him. I've used Nick several times for various jobs over the years and he is always prompt, communicative, and truly cares about doing high quality work as if it was for himself.
Add to that that he is quite funny, and there is really no reason to go elsewhere. Nick is knowledgeable, nice and efficient.
I will only use another plumber if Nick tells me he can't/won't do something that I need done. Here's why: I screwed up, it was my fault.
There was a leak from the faucet of the bathtub and we thought we could fix it ourselves so we didn't call anyone. We bought replacement parts, opened it up, quickly realized it was beyond us so we called a plumber who came out, told us we had the wrong parts.
We bought the right parts but he couldn't come out for a couple of weeks so we just left it. We were going on vacation, so we told the plumber we'd set something up for the days right after we got back.
It was a small leak, we figured it would be fine for a week. No.
Fail. The day before we left I woke up to start cleaning and packing, went downstairs and saw 3 large bubbles in the ceiling which were leaking - the ceiling was bowing down.
The leak was minor from the faucet but was hellabig in the wall. I immediately jumped on Yelp and found Nick/Union Jack Plumbing.
I left 2 frantic messages for him: one with my name and number, the second actually describing the problem and sense of urgency. I really thought we were going to have to cancel our trip.
He called me back very quickly and initially gave me the name of someone else I could call for immediate service but we began talking and he offered to come by after 2pm. He came to the house with replacement parts, was SUPER nice and friendly, didn't mind my dog hanging out watching him and was gracious to answer my questions (I found what he was doing kind of fascinating).
Within 2 hours the problem was solved. He even fixed another minor problem for me at the same time.
So, house saved, water bill saved, vacation saved and I will be eternally grateful for his help. I can't say enough nice things.
If Yelp were the Academy Awards and we yelpers the panel, Nick would have my vote for the Oscar. I called Nick last week to fix a couple of leaks and install a new faucet.
He talked to me about options before he came out. He then came out about a week later.
He explained everything he was doing while he was doing it. He was very efficient and careful.
He fixed everything very swiftly. He gave me the invoice, and I thought it was very reasonable.
I would recommend Nick to anyone in need of plumbing work. Needed to cut roots out of sewer line and called on Nick after reading Yelp reviews.
He was prompt and efficiently rid our sewer line with 4 passes of his handy cutter. He charged a reasonable $158.
Nick was the third and last plumber we called on for this problem. Two Sundays prior, water from the washer came bubbling up a toilet.
Heaven help us if it had occurred a few minutes after leaving! See my review of ARS Rescue Rooter of that fiasco! Here is what I have learned about clogged sewer lines: 1. Call the city FIRST.
They will come 24/7, scope it to locate cause of clog (usually roots) and said scope will probably partially unclog the sewer. There is a meter on the probe to locate the distance from the cleanout.
If needed, obtain for free a dvd of the scope in about 10 days. 2.
Call Nick to clean out all remaining roots. 3.
Put "Rootx" in sewer line 4-6 weeks after Nick was there. This prevents root regrowth.
4. Apply "Rootx" every 1-2 years.
5. If sewer clogs again, begin at #1.
Nick is professional, knowledgable, reasonable and his accent is too fun! Nick saved me a fortune. I woke up one Thursday morning to a friendly notice from Austin utilities telling me I "may" have a leak.
Turns out it was a 46,000 gallon leak from my water main! As I'm sure you've read from other reviews, Nick is incredibly busy. I wasn't expecting to hear back until a few days later.
But Nick called me back that day and arranged to come over and take a look. Nick found the leak and rerouted the pipe, since a tree's tap root had severed it.
He fixed it at a wonderfully reasonable rate. There's a reason he's so busy - he fixes it right the first time without wasting time.
Thanks again Nick! Other reviews are spot on - do not call anyone other than Nick. Had him do some major work in my previous house and was incredibly happy with his adherence to agreed schedule, attitude and quality of work.
A really good guy all around that doesn't stick it to the little guy, unlike every other big plumbing company I've ever used. He didn't even complain when he had to crawl around under my 100+ year old house in a really tight and nasty crawl space for an extended period of time.
Highly recommended.'''.
