Review and analyze now for company Altstadt Hoffman Plumbing Services and provide the analysis in the discussed format for the following reviews: '''Sump pump failed. Crawlspace full of water.
This was on a Saturday. Called the answering service, received a call back from "Shawn" less than 30 minutes later.
He was busy with other jobs, but walked me through bypassing the float switch so I could pump out the water! He called less than 2 hours later saying he was just a couple minutes away if I wanted him to come (that was nice planning on his part given his busy schedule since this 'should' be a quick job). Shawn and his helper arrived, replaced the pump and were finished in 17 minutes.
Very satisfied with the level of service, professionalism, tools on hand to complete the job. Received the bill and it was incorrectly billed for 1.5 hours (I guess they round up to 1 hour minimum from 17 minutes).
The cost of the pump they installed was within 1 dollar of what I found online, so that was good. The cost for the labor (one hour billed) was $200.
Pricey, but I am pleased that the work was completed correctly and quickly. Given that they arrived quickly on a weekend, staffed with professionals, and doing the job right the first time...that equals quality plumbing service...at a price.
Such a great company. Andy Elfreich has done an amazing job on bathroom and kitchen remodels.
They have done jobs in Florida and they have redone apartments at Oakland City University. They know what they are doing and their prices are reasonable.
Chip Alstadt and Andy Hoffman have outdone themselves with everything they have done. These pictures are some of the jobs Andy has done for me.
We have used Altstadt Hoffman Plumbing Services a few times. Most recently they replaced our water heater.
The technician Cole did an awesome job! He was prompt, professional and he did an amazing job cleaning up before leaving. We would definitely recommend Altstadt Hoffman Plumbing Services to anyone in need of plumbing services.
Oh, and the ladies in the office went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. Super friendly staff! Plumber came to my house for a stopped up septic pipe.
I went out to check on him. He had a big machine for roto rooter.
He was going to cut a hole in my pipe. I told him NOT to cut a hole in my pipe.
I asked if he has a smaller snake he can use inside through the toilet. He said he didn't have one.
All he has is the big machine. And he would have to pull the toilet and carry his big dirty machine though my house to unclog it.
I called bullshit. He doesn't have enough tools in his truck to do a job right.
Then he had his hole saw and going to cut a hole in my pipe. I was screaming at him " don't cut a hole in my pipe.
He ignored me and cut a hole in my pipe. He said he would put a clean out pipe on it.
I asked how much that would cost me. He said it would be the $230 the original price.
He said it wouldn't be more. I asked him a bunch more times and worded it different each time.
He said it wouldn't cost more. He was at his truck for about 20 minutes.
I went to see what he was doing. He has a junk bucket in his hand.
He dumped out the bucket and cut a circle out of it. I was wondering why he did that.
He took the circle piece and put it over the hole that he cut in my pipe while I was screaming at him " don't cut a hole in my pipe". I asked him why he was doing that.
He said to seal the hole he cut in my pipe. I said you said you would put a clean out pipe on it.
Then he said that it would be $450 more. I said if you put that over the hole he cut in my pipe while I was screaming don't cut a hole in the pipe" I said the roots will grow into the hole he cut in my pipe.
He assured me there wasn't any roots in the ground. He could see the roots in the ground.
He said over and over there aren't any roots in the ground. He completely ignored me.
He took the piece of junk bucket and put it over the hole he cut in my pipe. It didn't fit on the pipe.
I was screaming at him you said you would put a clean out pipe on it for $230 dollars. He ignored me.
He put concrete powder over the hole to seal it up. I said the roots will grow into that.
He again assured me that that there were no roots in the ground. He didn't mix water in the concrete.
I said water is one of the ingredients in concrete. He said water from the ground would mix in with the concrete.
How is water getting under my house. He ignored me.
I said you said you were going to put a clean out pipe for $230 he ignored me. He didn't rebury my pipe.
He left the hole he dug. And he left.
I complained to the woman who answered the phone. I left a message for the owner to call me.
No one called me back. I can't make any derogatory comments so fill in the blanks.
Pathetic management and attitude. I called Alstadt for plumbing in a house that I was redoing.
When Chad Hobgood came out the first time, he acted as though he did NOT want to be there. Even my Electrician, who was there at the time, was appalled by his snide remarks and attitude.
After leaving, Chad said he would get an estimate out. After a few weeks I still hadn't heard anything back.
So I call, only to get told that he forgot how much work and material would be needed and he would have to make another trip out. After Chad came back out to the house, he tells me how far out they are and to call the switchboard to get a date set up with a 50% deposit.
The date I arranged for came and went, no communication from his end. I ended up calling and getting my money back a few weeks later.
I know people who have used this company in the past, with very good results, which is why I chose to go with Alstadt. I'm not sure if the entire company is run this way or if Chad is an exception.
I would never keep someone employed that pulls this kind of crap.. Unacceptable.
I would never recommend anyone call Altstadt for anything. We had sewage back up in our basement so we called them on a Sunday to come fix it, they showed up said they unclogged it and found a broken pipe outside of our home.
They needed to send someone to give us a quote to fix the broken pipe, but we would be able to use our water until the person giving a quote came two Mondays later. This bill cost me $530 and included items they said it would not.
The following weekend six days later our entire basement bathroom and room next to it are full of sewage. I called them to come back since they didn't solve any of my problems, I was told it would cost me ANOTHER $530.
Obviously I did not accept this. We called a competitor who charged me less than half this price I called again on Monday to speak with someone regarding the first bill since they clearly had not solved my problem, two weeks later and no one has called me back.
Now tonight I went to use the bathroom upstairs where about a month ago we had them install a toilet and it's wobbling and has water leaking from the sides. Clearly Altstadt is not a company that wants to actually fix problems and do quality work but instead wants to try and make as much money as possible by charging customers for low quality work and hoping they will call them back to fix the issue they didn't originally fix.
At this point I probably would have had better luck just looking up how to do the work on YouTube, no one should ever call Altstadt for a single thing Edit to add more information: After 3 weeks we are STILL going back and forth with "Mr.Flowers" to get our money back from them not being able to simply install a toilet properly. He's made up multiple excuses why he can't give us a refund including not being able to read a printed invoice he forced us to mail instead of emailing, now he claims I have to contact the other company who fixed their mistake to get information for HIM on what was wrong with the toilet.
Apparently he doesn't do his job at all and just sits there waiting for everyone else to do everything for him. I've used Altstadt Hoffman Plumbing 3 times now in 3 different homes.
Each time they were extremely friendly when I called. Sammy and Heather both in the office were helpful and detail oriented.
My most recent service call, Josh and Cole came out. This was very basic work, but they did it even faster and better than I could've expected.
Well done being professional and proficient guys! Each time I've used this company they have answered the phone, had a since of urgency for my jobs and have done solid work. Well done everyone at Altstadt from the office to the field! Ben I've used Hoffman plumbing quite a bit in the past for home, rental property issues, and in my wife's store in Eastland Mall.
They always did a good job at a fair price. However, I'm wondering now if Alstadt needed to buy Hoffman's good name.
Since the buyout they have provided extremely poor quality work for extremely high prices. One of my rentals in Newburgh had repeated sewer stoppages due to tree roots.
They camera'd the line and said a 6 foot section needed replaced. I specifically asked if that would be enough to fix the problem and they said yes.
A year later the line started clogging regularly again and I called them. They said they needed to replace the rest of the line.
I told them to do it tho I was upset that they didn't do it right the first time. They said they'd knock the price down since I was now in over 8k.
They replaced the rest of the line but left a mound of dirt from the trenching. The tenant was upset as it was unsightly and in the way.
I called and they said smoothing the dirt out was not included in the quote.?! Who bids a job without including the price of cleaning up their mess??? I politely asked them to clean up their mess. They did, and a month later they sent my management company a bill for over $800! The management company called me when they got the bill as they wanted me to be aware of how high it was before they paid it.
I told them I would call Alstadt to find out why the bill was so high and to hold off on paying it as it was most likely a mistake. I called and they said someone would call me back.
I have never heard from them. One man with a shovel could have spread this dirt easily in an hour.
IMO they were padding the bill and counting on the management company just paying it without raising a red flag to me. To make matters worse, while still waiting for their call back, I called them to unclog the kitchen sink in my home (thinking that the other situation would be resolved) and they refused to come out.
The girl said they wouldn't do it because it was me. IMO they knew that I would question an unreasonable charge.
I'm actually glad this happened as the management company uses much better plumbers (I requested that they use Hoffman Plumbing when I turned my rental properties over to them as I had always found Jeff Hoffman to be fair and honest in our business dealings). Good riddance Alstadt! Horrible service, they gave a time to come to our residence and never showed up, called and continued to get the run around, friday and then it went to monday then it was the end of the week the whole entire time we have a water leak, this is very very bad business, save your time and money, do not call this place for services apparently they dont need homeowners business or money.
Altstadt Hoffman Plumbing did plumbing to install a new dishwasher, but installed it incorrectly so the dishwasher never had hot water to clean the dishes. When I had them come out to resolve a drain clog, they came out with the wrong equipment for the job.
I asked them to look at the plumbing to the dishwasher. They told me that the previous plumber had installed it incorrectly, and they charged me to repair the problem (which THEY caused).
They came back with proper equipment for the drain clog, but I was charged for the wasted time too. They sent two bills, with four different labor rates, which I questioned and they would never reply to explain the bills.
I made multiple attempts to get the bill corrected to no avail. Instead, they sued me.
This is not a company you'll want to do business with. Call ANYBODY else but Altstadt.
Terrible management, terrible service, terrible billing. I cant say enough bad about this company.
Used them on a new home build and every step of the way it was something wrong and now their billing department cant tell me what i'm paying for. Havent been able to get an itemized list from them for anything.
We had them out 3 times in the past couple of months. We were customers of Hoffman Plumbing before they merged with Alstadt.
They were just as friendly, professional and informative as they were in the past. Even the people that answer the phones are always nice.
Dakota was the last plumber we had. We had never met him but we were very impressed.
He was knowledgeable, informative and fast. Also we tried to give him a $20 tip and he refused to take it.
He said to "pay it forward/buy a strangers lunch". That's never happened to us in the 40+ years of hiring people and giving tips to those that definitely earned them.
I have used them twice and will never use them again. Each time, my bill has been nickeled and dimed with every little thing being a separate fee.
The plumber came out without the correct part and I was charged for an hour of plumbing when in reality he was driving back to get a part he should have had on his truck. If you call them to talk to them about it, they won't take your call or return any calls.
When I called yet again, to complain about their truly horrid customer service, I was hung up on by a nasty receptionist. Altstadt cleared out tree roots in nearly every pipe in our house's entire plumbing system when 2 other plumbers (each coming 2 times) could not.
We dealt with laundry issues for over 2 years, but Altstadt showed up (horrified that we'd had to deal with it for that long!) and promised that that would be the last day we'd ever have to take an entire day to do one load of laundry. They were right! Professional, diligent, friendly, and reasonably priced.
We hope to never need them again but if we do have plumbing problems in the future, we will be calling Altstadt! I called Altstadt about my bathtub leaking into the condo below mine. They were recommended by the condo management because they had just fixed a similar problem and were reasonably priced I was told.
They sent 2 plumbers to fill up my bath tub, splash water into the train and then check the condo below. After seeing nothing, they caulked around the drain.
For this service, I was charged $25 for use of the van(which they didn't use) $210 for 2 plumbers and $30 for materials. I both called and wrote them about this.
I didn't receive any response until my bill was 3 months past due. Then they called.
I told them I had no problem paying for their service but since they had recently been to the condos, they did not need to send 2 men as our maintenance person is there to help. They put me on hold to speak with "someone" and agreed to only charge me for 1 plumber.
I asked for a statement and said I would pay once I received it. I received a call the next day wondering when I was going to pay.
When I received my statement, there was a finance charge. 100% satisfaction guaranteed, not hardly.
So they came out to my house and we're nice. They were on time and prompt.
My father had surgery and couldn't do the work himself and I thought it would be easier to just hire it done. I'll start by saying they gave a quote not to exceed $1200.
They get here and have to provide me with a new estimate of not to exceed $1500. Annoying.
So I agreed but informed them if they were changing my pipes I wanted the copper from them. My husband was hauling it off the copper from various other things that weekend and I knew it would be quite a bit.
They took it. Not only that they took a 2.5 hour lunch break and stole my washing machine hook ups.
They were the solid steel kind and brand new. So I go back to my house and wait for them to finish.
All new pex pipes. So I run to get my kids and come back and they inform me the jobs all done but the sink isn't working and for an additional $200 they can fix that.
No thanks. I go into my bathroom and the shower is leaking.
I pull the washer out and the piece of bead board covering pipes in the wall to find the same old steel and copper pipe with an adapter to the new pex pipe. Not kidding.
So I know this company used to be decent but i think they must have some shady employees or something. They absolutely are awful.'''.
