Review and analyze now for company John Nugent & Sons and provide the analysis in the discussed format for the following reviews: '''First, I am a retired builder so I understand what is happening with this HVAC system (I built my house). John Nugent and sons were the most professional people I have dealt with in my career.
I am indeed sorry that I never heard of them while I was working as I would have had a lot fewer callbacks! I only heard of them because a few years ago I was introduced to a family member, John Nugent. I am beyond elated at both the work and the cleanliness! I can't recommend them enough!! Yesterday I had my hot water heater replaced by John Nugent and Son's.
The technician was punctual, calling 30 minutes out, professional, and left everything 100% the way he found it. Our service closet is truly a small closet with our furnace crammed in with the HWH, yet this magician managed to offer us a better size fit that is code acceptable with the same results as our old one.
We could not be happier. I've been working with J Nugent for a few years now - my personal home as well as a rental property.
These guys are the real deal. The total job yesterday was nearly $1500 less than a quote for the same job from the "guy on the back of the truck".
Last week I had Nick out to do some furnace work - Another example of quality and professionalism. Not to jinx anyone, but if you are in need - give these guys a try.
You will not be disappointed - and if you are, they want to know and they will make it right. WARNING ! DO NOT.
I think going out of business. WARNING ! I'll post my horrible experience with John Nugent & Sons at the end.
If this site had a negative scale, I would give them a minus 5. But first some WARNING.
DO NOT.... - DO NOT.
Should you decide to do business....rather try to do....business with John Nugent ( JNS ), make sure you get a complete list of key contacts of supervisors, managers, chief operation officer, and VP of customer service. Then verify them by calling.
With emails and phone numbers . DO NOT accept the main phone number as point of contact.
Otherwise you will never speak to anyone other than call center agent. Do NOT sign any contract or put down any deposit unless you get direct point of contacts.
DO NOT accept the main phone number (703) 356-7499. Your concerns will only be blocked and dumped into a blackhole.
- DO NOT sign anything unless you receive a clear document detailing JNS escalation process, customer complaints, and management contacts. Staple these contacts to your contract for when things go sideways on your repairs and projects.
- DO NOT sign anything unless you have a binding start and finish date. DO NOT.
I am going on 10 week ( 2 1/2 months ) with my plumbing leak and 5 weeks on HVAC replacement. More on story below.
- DO NOT agree to a 50% deposit on any big project like my HVAC system. I am going on 7 days now waiting for my deposit check back.
F.H. Furr and others only require 10-30% at best.
DO NOT put down 50%. - DO NOT deal with Hiba Noori.
Unfortunately the JNS call center agents act as gatekeepers and will not share or pass message to anyone accountable. The only contact the call agent gave me is Hiba who is just a project manager for HVAC.
I have a feeling someone is trying to hide what's going on with my case from rest of management and owners. - Read other recent poor reviews like Nancy Berry.
Sounds similar to my situation. Unfortunately I waited too long to resolve my HVAC installation.
I guess I will be starting legal proceedings next. MY STORY: As with Nancy Barry's recent poor experience and many others, I engaged JNS and then everything went sideways since.
10 weeks later they keep jerking me around with some excuse that they are trying to get me a shower fixture cartridge. "Oh the supplier sent us the incorrect part.
Oh, the part is discontinued. Oh the part is now available.
Oh we're still waiting on part. " It took me only one day to get the cartridge on Amazon.
Shame on you JNS for lying to me ( tech Zam ). Only tech would take my calls.
Not a single call from a manger, supervisor, or customer service. Shame on you.
The VA Attorney General would love to hear about your small business practices. I engaged JNS on good faith to take a look at my 14 years old Carrier on June 24, 2024 and cut a check for 50% of a $18,450 project.
Five weeks later, going on 6 , I have had zero status on my new HVAC system install. JNS was quick to cash my check.
But apparently holding onto my money. Zero status or communication from JNS.
Not even an apology from a VP of operations, customer service, or owner. Treated with total disrespect.
So much for JNS website garbage about we care. In short I WOULD NOT do business with JNS.
I think they are either going out of business or soon to be acquired. Based on my experience and observation,, I think they are well on their way to going out of business.
Extremely reckless and carless organization. I regret ever having done business with them over years.
Heads up to others who live in Great Falls, VA and McLean. I am sure the reply to this review will be another boiler plate response.
Great service and smart, efficient techs. Had a problem with our whole house humidifier that 3 other techs including the guy that installed it looked at but couldn't figure out.
Called Nugent & Sons and the guy figured it out in less than 15 minutes (a wiring issue) and fixed it for less than $150. Today, the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend with temperatures in the 80's, two of our AC units are not working right, one stopped working completely and the other can't cool when the temp gets over 90F.
Called at 8:15am, the tech was at my house at 1:30pm, and in less than an hour fixed both problems, he had all of the parts that he needed in his truck, the cost was completely reasonable. No attempt to upsell or sell me a service contract or any other nonsense.
So great to find an honest and capable HVAC company I'll definitely call them for any other issue in the future. Very mixed experience with Nugent & Sons.
On one hand, they've done good quality work for me for about 5 years. On the other hand, when it was probably time for new HVAC...
- the Tech inspecting my system quickly went from telling me that business was slow to using sales tactics to get me to rush into a quick decision. MAJOR RED FLAG! I despise this crap.
- the Tech provided information about HVAC systems that was factually incorrect. A second RED FLAG! Also infuriating.
- I delayed and had an appointment with a salesperson, RJ. It was actually a great conversation! But despite several attempts, RJ never got back to me with the prices I requested.
Third RED FLAG! Thanks for wasting my time! - They contacted me 3 times through their reputation management company to ask for reviews. This a system that companies use to game review sites and search engine rankings.
While Nugents & Sons has a lot of company in this regard, it still stinks. In a pinch, I would gladly use Nugent & Sons again rather than someone like Parrish Services.
But I'm not going to do business with Nugent & Sons anymore. Do not use this company.
It took over 1.5 months to get them to our site for an HVAC seasonal check. The work was not finished as they said they would be back and schedule another time to come and finish the work to install a better P-trap to be able to clean it out easily.
However, they did not schedule a come back, I called and had to schedule the come back and they put me on the schedule for another month out and this should have taken priority as they said it needed a better cleanout and I wanted that too and I needed the pipes cleaned and checked the first time that they were on site. Well 4 days before they were scheduled to come out the pipe that was to be fixed clogged and backed up causing water damage to desks, to the ceiling, and walls, and flooring due to their lack of priority.
The value they provide is lacking in judgement when it comes to urgency to come back and repair the items needed in the timely manner. When they called they said "sorry, we don't warranty leaks" and their customer service was abysmal.
They took no responsibility for their lack of urgency and taking 1.5 months to come to site, then not to fix what was needed to be fixed, then 1 more month to come back to site to fix the drain pipe that needed to be fixed and then the drain pipe clogs during this time and they take NO responsibility for this! Never use this company. On their website they offer free estimates.
I called in to have a leaky valve faucet fixed/replace but wanted to charge me $95 to come out. I told Janice on the website it says free estimate but because the job wasn't a big repair meaning I wasn't go to spend $5000 They needed to get $95 bucks off me.
Very bad business . We have a service contract with John Nugent, so when we decided to have a whole-house dehumidifier installed in 2021, we had them do it.
In 2022, the entire unit needed to be replaced. It was under warranty for both parts and labor, so it wasn't a big deal.
Now, in 2024, the unit needs to be replaced AGAIN and this time, Nugent won't warranty the labor. They want to bill us $1000 to install a dehumidifier they have already installed twice.
To make matters worse, we have waited two weeks in July in Washington, DC weather, and still no dehumidifier. Every time we call, we get a different answer about when the unit will actually arrive.
Needless to say, we will not maintain a service contract with this company. Don't call them if you own a condominium.
They say that they don't do "chillers"; i.e., condominium heating/AC units. We had several overhead lights and outlets in our basement suddenly stip working.
After checkibg the breakers I posted a job on Yelp. They were timely, efficient, and reliable.
Electrician was able to troubleshoot the problem to a partially broken light switch. I would recommend andbuse them again.
We had to replace our AC/furnace unit after 21 yrs (Rudd) and we used John Nugent & Sons after getting quotes from 4 other businesses. Tim Stewart explained my options and explained what was best for the home we live in.
The crew was prompt and they were all hard workers. They were very pleasant individuals who really knew their job but also enjoyed working together and there was very good energy with the crew.
After they finished installing everything, they were very thorough with testing the unit. They did a really good job of cleaning up and protecting our floors.
Everything has been working great and we were very pleased with the entire experience. We highly recommend John Nugent & Sons for your AC/Heating needs.
Our 31 year old furnace died during cold weather. John Nugent and Sons got us fitted with a new furnace in just a few days and provided us with space heaters free of charge for those few days.
Installation was fast, professional, and problem-free. Ruben, Jarvis, and Lucas were ON IT! Very happy with my experience.
Electrical issue involving GFI, freezer, as breakers. Brandon was here along working on options to solve the problem.
We agreed to replace the old GFI. I requested we also replace the breaker switch and it is on order.
I do not want to lose all my food in my garage rated refrigerator. I have had good success with this company doing seasonal inspections of my furnace, at least until recently.
For example, I recently complained about how a furnace inspection was performed and they did not call me back. There have been other times when they do not follow through on promises to get back to you.
This could be a clerical/receptionist issue but it is still a poor reflection on the company. I am going elsewhere for seasonal inspections.
Very expensive $$$ $600 for new garbage disposal, took 45 minutes to install for $400 labor. If you can afford it, service is reliable but if not an emergency, call around.
Outrageous pricing! John Nugent & Son's consistently show up and do great work! I have used them for our geo thermal system, water heater, and generator issues and never had an issue with the work they did. Manny who is one of the employees did a difficult installation and I was so impressed with his patience during the process! I would highly recommend Pat and his team! We are so pleased with John Nugent & Sons.
We haves used them for AC/heating since our move into our house and have always been pleased with the service. Today I called them about plumbing, specifically a recently discovered brake/leak between the laundry room and bathroom.
Not only did RL and an assistant come over but they determined & fixed the issue with a couple hours. I am just so pleased.
The whole process was much, much less painful than expected. John Nugent is now on my favorites phone numbers list Don't expect them to honor their appointments.
They can't follow simple directions, like calling before coming to an appointment. Service is great! All the people are great.
I love seeing the same people who come service my air conditioner and furnace. I have been using John Nugent for about 5 years.
They don't find something wrong just to make money like that other big group that I refuse to use ever again. I can't think of their names.
But I will let you know. Beware of Ted Nugent and Sons Plumbers! They advertise that they can install sewer ejection pits so I called them and had them come out to give me a quote.
Additionally I provided them with all the plans and info on codes from Arlington County they would need to facilitate giving me a quote. When weeks went by and I didn't hear from them I called them to see what was going on and got a call back the next day telling they wouldn't do this because of the "codes".
No explanation were offered on this refusal even though I reminded them they had the info on the "codes'. My grip is the length of time they took getting back to me and the refusal to do the work, so in my mind this is false advertising.
Companies like Nugent and other big plumbing companies with their big prices and bad attitudes give a bad name to plumbers everywhere. I have been a customer of John Nugent & sons for multiple years.
They have always come through for me - especially their tech JASON YIM. He came today to do my cooling system checkup - and solved problems I didn't know I had.
This man really knows his business - worked smoothly and professionally - and respected my home and yard. The A/C is a blessing in this awful heat.
I am so pleased I was smart enough to hire John Nugent & Sons - and have Jason at the door! For those who complained Nugent didn't show up on time nor called - it is okay to remember Techs also have to respond to emergency calls - especially for heat. Before you are late for dinner, be glad they still were there to handle your needs.
Owner was very responsive and helped resolve issues that I brought up. Feel confident moving forward that less issues with my AC/Heating system will occur and communication will be better.
For the exact same service, the cost went from $269 on Nov 23, 2021 to $394 on Jul 21, 2023 -- that's a 46.5% increase. I know we have had inflation in the past couple of years, but didn't think is was even close to 50%.
And in addition, in 2021 there was no "Service Call Fee" (or it was waived when I spent $269 on services). Now there is a $95 "Service Call Fee".
I could understand charging me the "Service Call Fee" if the technician shows up and I then decide I need no work done. But this time I spend nearly $400 on services and still have to pay the $95 "Service Call Fee"? I think I'll look around for other plumbing services.
Technician (Micheal) was great -- knowledgeable, quick, polite/professional. 10/10.
The technician is very hard working and completed the job so easily. He even waited for me while I dropped off my kid before paying.
Great service great price I am very pleased with response and service by Nugent and Sons. They replaced an 18 year old Air Handler which was in a tight closet - and also replaced a rusting hot water heater.
They created the proposal quickly and the prices were very fair. The work took most of a day and I was very impressed by the Nugent staff - they were very pleasant and professional.
The installation quality reflects their attention to detail. I will certainly call them again.
Wow, talk about some clean pipes. Stephen came on over, I had a huge back up.
He said the job may have taken 15 minutes but he was in and out in 10. I am incredibly pleased with the service.
My life has been crashing around this autumn, and this plumbing problem was just yet another on that large pile. I'd originally contacted another plumbing service, who charged me around $300 for leak detection (there was no teardown of any sort at the time).
The original plumber explained that it would cost me at least $1000 to fix everything (including pipes). With his initial assessment and some advice, I looked for a remediation service.
The remediation specialist then told me that I wouldn't need such levels of service, probably, and that maybe I ought to call a different plumbing service, as the first plumber's standards were not industry standard. So I did.
I called several, and eventually ended up with John Nugent & Sons. Shawn came out, took a look, and then fixed the faucet, telling me what I needed to look out for.
He answered many questions I had regarding the faucet and shower, and even helped me out with the shower drain. He charged me around $200 total.
He also said I didn't need to replace any pipes. So he saved me quite the headache and money.
If we have any more plumbing concerns, we will be calling on John Nugent & Sons, and I will specifically be asking for Shawn. Thank you so much for helping me out during this rough time.
I have used this plumbing company twice to clean our tankless water heater and was pleased with their service. When we decided to renovate a bathroom, I called them to ask them if they could do the plumbing and was assured they could.
I made an appointment for them to give an estimate and was told there would be a $95.00 fee. I then asked if that would be applied to the final cost.
Initially they said no but when I said other companies did so they said they would also apply it to the final bill, which I estimated at about $3,000 for installing shower components. On the day of the estimate I was waiting for the estimator when there came a loud knock on a door from our screened porch in the back of our house leading to our family room.
The man wearing a Nugent shirt told me he couldn't find the front door. I invited him in and my son and I showed him the bathroom as well as a drawing of what and where we wanted the parts installed.
He asked no questions and took some pictures and told us he would send us an estimate by 5:30 pm that day or the next. I verified my email, which he had on his paperwork.
Long story I know. In short we never heard from him or anyone else at the company.
It's been more than a month, we now have another plumbing company and work is under way. I am amazed that they sent someone who couldn't find our front door and that neither he nor anyone else at this "family owned since 1975" company has contacted me.
Is it because I asked about the estimate fee? Jeez. John Nugent and Sons provided us exceptional service in the repair of our furnace.
This was particularly difficult problem to diagnose in that involved both a pressure switch and a problem involving water build up in the piping that connects the hot water heater and the furnace. The furnace would operate for a while then shut off.
The problem was finally diagnosed after repeated visits by the repair man and then the branch manager. Finally the repairs were made, the problem solved and the prices quite reasonable despite several visits to diagnose the problem.
Many companies would insist a new furnace was the solution. John Nugent and Sons solved the problem for us and saved the expense of a new furnace.
Exceptional service. ! I had an issue where my furnace was intermittently shutting off the heat - it was a really strange issue where it would work sometimes and heat would emanate and then sometimes it wouldn't, even if the thermostat was freezing cold.
The technician, Jason, came and surmised after analyzing the furnace that there weren't issues with the furnace itself. He believed there were condensation issues and worked on the condensation pipe, cutting it to facilitate proper clearing.
Unfortunately, after he left, the issue continued. I called John Nugent and they sent him back.
We were stumped. He and I had a conversation and we followed the pipe through my house to the outside - then he figured out what the issue was! It was a little tricky to diagnose, but Jason was very patient and took the time to try to explain his thinking on the problem as our thinking evolved on the issue.
I had a really good experience with John Nugent, and would have them back again as a result. Repair incomplete.
Job requested incomplete. Calls not returned.
I cannot recommend this company unfortunately. What an awesome company! They sent Dave and Jorge, who were absolute kind professionals.
They blew our minds with their professionalism and the care they took installing our kitchen hood vent. Thank you for every bit of effort you put into our new home.
We appreciate you and will recommend you to everyone we know!! Doug came out to our home to evaluate the electrical needs for a new wall oven. He called 30 minutes prior to arrival.
He was on time, professional, and quick. I would certainly recommend John Nugent U& Sons in the future and will make sure to endorse their work on our neighborhood website.
Excellent experience. We have an older home, built late 40s.
The drainpipe for our tub was rusted through and leaking. No easy fix -- pipes connections frozen in place, an impossibly tight workspace behind the access panel.
We worried about repairs that would damage the tub or 75-year-old, impossible-to-match tile. We took bids on a bathroom remodel, and prepared ourselves for an expensive, time-consuming project.
Luckily, we called John Nugent & Sons. Michael correctly assessed the best approach and fixed the leak.
He is very personable, a real pro, knows his trade and works with care. We are very happy with the work! Highly recommend! There is no other way to summarize my review other than "John Nugent & Sons tried to fraudulently sell my 91-year-old mother a new furnace." They did this in the most despicable way possible, by injecting fear into her mind.
Fear that her furnace was emitting carbon monoxide levels that were unsafe, as well as the ludicrous claim that flame roll-out from the furnace was a possibility. They came out on a service call for a furnace that had died.
The technician replaced the igniter and fixed the problem. Then he performed some carbon monoxide measurements following a protocol that I had never seen before.
I've been in the homebuilding and residential construction consulting business all my life. More importantly, for ten years (2009- 2020) I was an accredited building scientist, holding the Building Performance Institute Building Analyst designation.
BPI is the leading residential building science accreditation for people working on existing homes. BPI-BAs are trained to perform Combustion Appliance Zone Safety Testing, commonly referred to as a CAZ test.
This is testing on atmospheric drafting (as opposed to sealed combustion) appliances such as furnaces and water heaters. I write this review to both warn people away from John Nugent & Sons and to direct consumers to independent experts who can assess their atmospheric drafting appliances correctly, and without the inherent conflict of interest of a company that wants to sell you a new furnace no matter how big a lie they must tell the consumer.
Google home energy auditors or simply go the BPI website and search for these folks by state. The John Nugent & Sons technician, using a testing protocol that is nowhere to be found in any BPI testing, measured 15 ppm of carbon monoxide in my mom's home and told her that per company policy he had no choice but to turn off the furnace and provide her with space heaters until she had her furnace replaced.
He tried to scare her into thinking this was a serious health concern. He went one step further in his "fear tap and dance" by mentioning the possibility of flame roll-out.
Flame roll-out is the worst outcome of severe back drafting of an atmospherically drafting gas appliance. I was there listening to this and since I know how leaky (ie- drafty) this house is I knew from experience that you could likely never cause this furnace to back draft.
The CAZ testing protocol to assess if there's a carbon monoxide danger from atmospherically drafting gas appliances is complicated but suffice to say John Nugent & Sons did none of these steps. They include testing for a baseline atmospheric pressure, spillage and draft, as well as putting the entire house into a state to induce a worst-case depressurization scenario.
These tests must be performed and given a Pass/Fail determination (with the exception of the baseline pressure), in order to assess the carbon monoxide levels. John Nugent & Sons did none of this and tried to pass themselves off as experts and scare her into buying a new furnace.
Two days after this incident I was able to get a BPI- Building Analyst into my mom's home to perform a CAZ test. Now remember, Nugent & Sons measured 15 ppm carbon monoxide and told my mom they needed to immediately turn off the furnace and replace it.
Carbon monoxide detectors don't trip unless they measure 70 ppm of carbon monoxide over 1-4 hours, or 150 ppm over 10-50 minutes, or 400 ppm over 4-15 minutes (Nugent & Sons measured for approximately 20 minutes and the highest it got was 15 ppm of CO). A well-tuned gas stove puts out 5-15 ppm of CO, measured near the stove.
The BPI- Building Analyst I hired did a full CAZ test and found the furnace to be completely safe. He measured the CO level in the flue at 23 ppm and determined it's virtually impossible to back draft this CAZ.
I know this was a long review, but I'm so mad at this blatant attempt at fraud that either I warn consumers away from Nugent & Sons here or I go tell my story to the Fairfax County district attorney and see what they will do with this information. Sad to share my terrible experience with Nugent and Sons.
I have been a long time client with multiple properties but I will no longer be using Nugent nor will I be referring anyone to them, as I have for many years. Work was done at my home on a toilet in a guest bathroom and unbeknownst to me, the toilet was leaking when the tech left.
It was several days before it was discovered. There was considerable damage done the flooring and the ceiling below the bathroom had to be completely removed and replaced.
When the leak was discovered, I immediately turned off the water line and called Nugent. A tech came to my home the next day and after turning the water back on, confirmed that the previous tech had indeed made a huge mistake and the leak should absolutely have been addressed.
He assured me he would pass along that info. The next day, a manager and a senior tech came to my home to inspect the damage.
They announced that there was no leak, that they had no idea what could have happened but that it was not the fault of the previous tech. I am not sure if the tech who confirmed the problem adjusted something to stop the water flow and I will not accuse him of dishonesty.
I was assured there would be follow up on the part of Nugent and Sons. I left five messages with the manager, who refused to return my call.
I sent numerous emails, none of which were addressed. I have sent the invoice to Nugent for the repairs and have yet to receive any reimbursement.
To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I am shocked they would treat a long term client in this manner and have notified many of the families I have sent to Nugent to no longer use them.
Beware. Nugent technician came to our house twice in an effort to repair our frozen pipe.
The initial repair was faulty as the pipe continued to leak around the area where he crimped the repaired pipe. Unfortunately, his second repair was also ineffective.
